Getting to Know Kitchener: Doon Heritage Village

Welcome to another edition of Getting to Know Kitchener. Inspired by our blog series Getting to Know Guelph, we have turned our focus on the wonderful city of Kitchener! In each edition, we'll highlight one area or landmark in the city that deserves some recognition.

In this post, we travel back in time to highlight Doon Heritage Village - Kitchener's historic village that takes visitors back to 1914!

Have a suggestion on an area or location that deserves to be featured? We want to hear about it!

In a world where modern technology is found everywhere you look, it can be refreshing to take a step back to a simpler time. You don't have to travel to a remote location to find it, either, as the Doon Heritage Village is located in our very own city.

The Village, which is accessed through the Waterloo Region Museum, is an incredible 60-acre history village that allows you to travel back in time to 1914. Shopfronts are simple, the gardens are blossoming, and its staff dress the part, wearing clothing that was frequently worn more than 100 years ago.

Many of the buildings at the location have been removed and rebuilt on the property, helping add to the atmosphere of the village.

Some of the structures found include a post office, a grocer, sawmill, meat market, railway station, harness shop, church, and fire hall, among several other attractions. Horse-drawn carriages roam the streets and farm animals look on as you take a stroll down the sidewalk or gravel roadway.

Knowledgeable staff is found throughout, ready to play the part of a 1914 resident while offering educational history lessons to visitors. Several activities for children can also be found on site.

The Village is open Monday through Sunday from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM during the Spring and Summer. Hours shorten during the Fall, moving to open hours of 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM while closing on Saturday and Sundays. It is closed during the winters and reopens each year on May 1.

An admission for the Doon Heritage Village also grants you access to the Waterloo Region Museum main gallery and its featured exhibits, as well as the Waterloo Region Hall of Fame.

If you're looking for an escape from the hype and bustle of city life, the Doon Heritage Village is a stone-throw away - and you'll also get a history lesson!
